 And that's the end of the Schlueter trays! At least, the stack I've been pulling from. Lots of pictures of fig orchards in this bunch, but most amusing to me was the ad for Merit Bread toast on all the trucks in this fleet:

The Houstonian scanning, Michelle Godfrey-June 26, 2013

Today I completed the scanning for The Houstonian. There were no problems with the pages but I was not able to get the covers scanned.

It was interesting to see how the front covers progressed over time. Each issue has a photo of some noteworthy individual who was featured in the magazine. At one point, these photos had a smaller size on the cover but then they got larger and filled up the majority of the space. 

The magazine deals with women's affairs and interests and there were a couple of articles that caught my attention because of the funny choice of words and the relation to HPL.

Southern Architecture Review and Progressive Houston -- June 24, 2013 -- TAW

Today, I finished the Southern Architecture Review scans, which are now in two different folders (because of a pause last Thursday to transfer scans from the desktop to an external hard drive). I also scanned the Progressive Houston publication/compilation. No special notes or comments on these scans.

Panorama Scanning - Elaine Patton, 6/20/2013

Items scanned today:

• MSS0100-1071 - 1075 + a random, unnumbered Litterst panorama (piece of paper in the tray suggests that it should have contained 1050-1075)
• MSS0100-1126 - 1150
• MSS0100-1200 - 1224
• MSS0100-1325 - 1346

Saving to the internal hard drive rather than straight to the external seems to have neutralized the weird file corruption of last week. A couple of pictures were of uncertain identifier; these got labeled "### possibly" (as a question mark can't go in the file name).

North Side and The Houstonian Scanning, Michelle Godfrey-June19, 2013

Today I was able to complete the scanning of five North Side issues. There were no problems with any of them.

I also began scanning issues of The Houstonian published in 1917.  In the process of editing some of the images, I noticed that the scan for bk0073-0013 was missing.  I corrected the problem by inserting the page I had skipped and restored everything to the correct order.

 

Houston Postcards (MSS187) -- June 19, 2013 -- TAW

I worked through more of the MSS 187's postcards today. Per my conversation with Cecelia, I skipped a number of postcards that will likely need a more extensive scanner. Overall, I scanned MSS187-720-  MSS187-730; MSS187-876 - MSS187-883a; MSS187-1063 - MSS187 1065.

Panorama Scanning - Elaine Patton, 6/13/2013

Photos scanned: MSS0100-1151 - 1174, MSS0100-1175 - 1199, and MSS0100-1100 - 1125 (give or take).

For some reason at least a couple of the images didn't scan or write to the hard drive properly (trying to open them produced an error message about how the TIFF couldn't be parsed or something thereabouts). I rescanned the ones I noticed, but I didn't open all of them, so there's a possible future issue. The second tray also had a few duplicate numbers, marked by a (2) in the file names (and distinct from the extra-wide panorama that's labeled (pt 1) and (pt 2) in the file names).

Houston Postcards - June 5-6, 2013 - TAW

Last week, I started my volunteer work by scanning a box of Houston-themed postcards. Most of the postcards were blank (without back messages, that is), but many revealed messages from folks long past (I'd assume). It was quite amazing to see composed interactions among messengers and their recipients (I almost felt intrusive). No problems or special notes in need of mentioning.

North Side Magazine Collection - June 10, 2013 - TAW

Today, I completed scanning for The North Side Magazine collection. The process went relatively smoothly (just one slight tie-up with the book scanner resulting from my novice eye). Pages 59-60 and 109-10 are deeply embedded in the binding, so the readability/accessibility of those two spreads aren't as sharp as the others. The text itself showcases a series of highly (and problematically) gendered advertisements (i.e. household items are marketed primarily toward "housewives"). If you'd like to see a cultural snapshot of late 20's-early 30's suburban Houston -- good, bad, ugly, take a look at this text :-)

Sheet Music Collection Mary Sommerfeld June 5, 2013

I am on-loan from HMRC today.
Working on the 5th floor with the sheet music turned out to be rather productive.
Starting with row 227 I was able to get through 23 entries (ending at row 250).
With the add ins there were 8 that  plopped into the spread sheet (rows 1288 to 1296).
That ended up with a grand total of 31.
The only real challenge was getting through the Michael Bolton music.

Scanning, Michelle Godfrey- June 5, 2013

Today I was able to complete the scanning for the book, Norma Trist. It was published in 1895 and our copy was in fragile condition with the pages being dry and brittle. After reviewing the portion of the book that I finished last week, I could see that those scans were not as clear as they could be, so I re-scanned those pages to get better images.

I also saw that this book has been digitized by Google. Unlike our version, the Google copy does not have an image of the front cover and the pages are not in color.
