Shab, sheet music collection project, 12/18/2015

Today is my last day volunteering so I finished cataloging the section I was at as well as the first few cards of the Carole King section since those cards were routine and didn't present any challenges.  The only question that came up today concerns the cards for rows 433, 434, and 436.  Normally I put something that says something like "organ solo by [name]" in the note field because there are already other names in the 245 field.  This time, however, I'm wondering if the organ solo credits for those cards should be in the 245 field?  I'm not sure.  For now, I still put those in the note field for those cards (highlighted in red).

Thank you to Jeanette, Cecilia, and everyone else in the tech services department for having me volunteer here for two years.  I learned a lot and really enjoyed working with you all.  Thanks and happy holidays!

Shab, sheet music collection project, 12/11/2015

Today I cataloged 58 more cards of drawer 7 of the sheet music collection project.  Most of it was routine.  The card for row 377 seems to have more than one version of the title in it.  I put one of them in the other title (245) field; please let me know if that's correct.  There were two other cards that seemingly have alternate titles in them (it's a little harder to tell since they're foreign language cards): the cards for rows 410 and 411.  I tried researching them and using Google translate to see if the other titles were the foreign words translated into English but that wasn't the case for the card for row 410.  Still, it does appear to be an alternative title for the piece of music based on what I've learned about it.  I've colored the titles in red if you'd like to take a look and let me know where those titles should go.

The other issue that came up (which I think I've mentioned before) is how a couple of the cards have "musical revues...", etc. not separated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, etc.), like it would if it belongs in the subject field.  (Rows 379 and 392).  Therefore, it's confusing about whether to put that in the instrumentation field as the card would indicate, or the subject field, which is where it would usually go ( normally the cards always have it separated by Arabic numbers at the bottom of the card which indicates to put it into the subject fields).  For now I've included it in the instrumentation fields, highlighted in red.  Please let me know if this should be changed.  Thanks!

Today I cataloged 94 more cards of drawer 7 of the sheet music collection project.  Here are the questions I have:

1) The music upstairs needs to be checked for the cards for rows 282-284 - there is a discrepancy in the spelling of the composer's name.

2) For the card for row 287, it says something strange in the 245 field, "words usually ascribed to", which I've never seen before in a statement of responsibility field.  I'm not sure what to make of it so I typed it in exactly as is.  (I thought that if a cataloger is uncertain about a piece of info, it goes in brackets?)

3) For the card for row 291, the title field has the name in lower-case.  I typed it in that way but I'm wondering if it needs to be capitalized since it's a proper noun?

4) The card for row 332 has what appears to be a table of contents for that piece in the title field.  I put it in the contents note (505) for that reason - if it doesn't belong there, please let me know.

Everything else was routine.

Today I cataloged 81 cards of drawer 7 of the sheet music collection project.  Most everything was routine.  The cards for rows 272 and 273 need to be checked against the sheet music upstairs - there is a spelling discrepancy for the composer's first name.  Could you please also check the card for row 240 - it said on the card "based on..." and I'm not sure where that goes.  For now I've put it in the general note field (500).  Thanks.

Today I cataloged 51 more cards of drawer 7 of the sheet music collection project.  No real issues, except once again I am wondering if "Songs, German" belongs in the language field or somewhere else?  (row 175)  I also had a card where the band's name (Kansas) and one of the band member's name were both on there.  I put the band name under composer and the member's name under co-composer, though I'm not sure if that's the best place to put the band member's name.  Jeanette, please let me know your thoughts on this (card for row 190).  Otherwise, the only question I have - which I believe I've asked before - is what "n.p." means (it doesn't mean unpaged because the page number was on the card).  If there's been any info on what this could mean, please let me know (card for row 191).  Thanks!  

Shab, sheet music collection project, 10/23/2015

Today I managed to catalog 70 cards of drawer 7 of the sheet music collection project.  I have several issues to discuss:

1) the card for row 72 had the words "a ragtime two step" next to the title; some cursory research reveals that this is a subtitle, however, I'm not sure if it should go into the alternate title field so for now I've left it in the title field (highlighted in red); please let me know if this should be changed

2) the card for row 77 has an issue I mentioned in my last blog post, the words "at head of title..." on the card; I'm not sure what this is or where it belongs so for now (like last time), I've put it in a note field (highlighted in red); please let me know your thoughts on this

3) please check the cards for rows 83-84 because I have several issues here (all highlighted in red); I'm not sure where the genre (type of music like ballad or lullaby) should go (or if it needs cataloging at all?); I'm also not sure what to do about notes about where the music appeared or where it's filed (for now, they're also in the note fields highlighted in red but I have a feeling this isn't necessary to catalog - still, I didn't want to leave it out till I've checked with you)

4) row 88 - can't remember if "Songs, German" should be in the note or instrumentation or language field?  I put it in the language field since it seems the most logical for now?

5) the card for row 116 also has an issue brought up previously - what to do with a title or music piece that seems to have different titles and/or part of the title is in brackets?  also an editor listed on this card and I wasn't sure what statement of responsibility field (if any) an editor should be listed in or needs to be listed at all?  I thought the name should be included somewhere so for now it's also in the note field but that's probably wrong.  I don't know if anyone really searches for music with the editor's name?

Today I cataloged 70 cards of drawer 7 of the sheet music collection project.  Most everything was routine with just a few questions.

Jeanette, could you please check the following rows/fields: row 11 had some strange information all over the card (please check the fields I highlighted in red because I'm not sure if they're all correct - the title field, and instrumentation and note fields).  The card for row 49 had "parts 1 and 2" next to the title field; I put it in the title field but I'm not sure if it should be there (or anywhere else?)  Could you also please let me know about the note field highlighted in red for row 69 - it had what looked like a note about the sheet music in it but I don't know if I've put it in there correctly or if it belongs somewhere else (or anywhere at all?)  Thanks for your input!

World Language Catalogue Project - 9/14

Last week I completed 400 records. the names of the catalogue in Hindi and Marathi were changed in devnagri - 4 hours.

Today I finished cataloging the rest of the cards in drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  Here are the issues that came up.  For the cards for rows 1178 and 1182, there was a note(?) on the card in quotes saying something about the music being the negro national anthem.  I guess my confusion is why this was written in quotes on the card (did it come from a review or something else that was directly quoted?)  I wasn't sure where to put it on the card so for now I've put it in the note (500) field.  Jeanette, please let me know your thoughts on this.

The other issue was seeing "popular song club" on the card for row 1188.  I've never seen that phrase on any card before and it doesn't sound like it belongs in instrumentation?  I really didn't know where to put it (it preceded the date like a publisher would).  For now I've put that in the note field too.  Please let me know what you think it could be and where it needs to go on the spreadsheet, if anywhere.  Thanks!  

Shab, sheet music collection project, 7/31/2015

Today I cataloged 93 more cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  The only new question that's come up is in reference to the cards for rows 1120-1122.  I think these cards are for the same collection of musical pieces so there's a main title in the title field and also a title for each movement(?), if that's what it's called.  I'm not sure if I cataloged these cards correctly in the title field so could you please check to see if it's correct.  I'm also uncertain about whether to put the main title (Americana) in the series field.  Normally, I don't do this unless the card says "Series" (and then lists the name of the series).  I didn't do it here because it's possible this isn't an actual series, more like a 3-part piece of music with each part cataloged on a separate card.  Jeanette, please me know your thoughts on this.  Otherwise everything was routine.  Thanks!

Today I managed to catalog 46 more cards of the sheet music collection project in drawer 6.  Jeanette, whenever you have time, could you please check the following rows/cells to see if they're correctly done (I've highlighted the fields in red).

Row 1020, the title field (245) (not sure about this, I mentioned it in my last blog post too about how titles that say they're covers in brackets should be cataloged)
Row 1034, the publisher field (I couldn't remember if we decided to omit the "distributed by" information from now on?)
Row 1046, the first note field (500) - does this belong in a note field, too?  I already put German in the language field (the card said "German and English" on it)

Everything else was routine.  Thanks for your help!

Today I completed organizing images into separate folders. This is a really fun and exciting way of getting hands-on experience in cataloging and metadata. So far all is well!

Today I continued with the historical images; making sure they are available online. However, I need to call HPL on Monday so I can refresh my memory on the issue of adding zeros to the image names. Other than that I feel I've done a good job.

Shab, sheet music collection project, 4/24/2015

Today I cataloged 88 more cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  Could you please check rows 923-925: I'm not sure about the 245 field in row 923, if that really belongs in there.  For row 924, the card said "Songs, German" which I put in the instrumentation field but I also added the language (German) to the 546 field so I hope this is correct.  Row 925's card mentions that one of the publishers was gleaned from the back cover - I'm not sure if this would go in the publisher field (260) itself or would be moved to, for example, a note field.  I don't think it goes in the publisher field but for now I've left it there.

Row 978's card has the words "Potpourri [cover]" next to the title field.  I think this is a song title from the opera "Ermine" but I'm not entirely sure where this goes because Ermine was in the title field or where to mention the note that it's a cover song.  For now, because of the word "[cover]" I've put it in a note field.  The last thing I was unsure of was the title for the card for row 1007 - it reads "Lucrezia borgia, [after] Donizetti."  I'm not sure about the "[after] Donizetti" part though I'm pretty certain this is not part of the title of the music.  But I'm not sure where (if anywhere) on the spreadsheet those words need to be put.

Today I cataloged 84 more cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  The only question I have is about row 838 - Jeanette, could you please look at this card (yellow sticky on it); it seemed to have some notes in there which I'm not sure where they belong (and there are only two note fields on the spreadsheet so I couldn't put them all in there).  There's a note there that begins with "Issued with..." which I'm uncertain about what that means or where (if anywhere) it should go on the sheet.  Next to it are more page numbers and the physical description.  I've seen "issued with" on the cards at least once before but I'm not very clear at this point what that means or if it's supposed to be cataloged anywhere on the sheet except the notes fields.  Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this and thanks.

Today I cataloged 75 more cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  Here are some issues I had.  The card for row 765 needs the note (500) field checked.  It said "With variations for two performers on the pianoforte, op. 32" in the title field (next to the title).  I don't think it belongs with the title but I have put "op.___" in the title field before so I'm not sure about that.

The card for row 786 raises two questions, one about the 100/composer field (the name on the card is Mrs. Mary K. Hutchinson) and the note field (transcription by this same name).  I remember from cataloging how titles such as Mr., Mrs., etc. do not belong in the statement of responsibility fields but I've left it in for now in case this is how the artist was famously known, like it was part of her professional artist name (like "Prince" or "Madonna", etc.).  I tried Googling the name to get info if that's the case but I couldn't find anything.  Most likely, the "Mrs." ought to be taken out?  Jeanette, please let me know your thoughts on this and also if there's a particular field, other than the note field, where transcriber names go?  (I think you'd told me earlier the note field is fine but I can't remember so please confirm this because I don't believe transcribers go in the statement of responsibility fields).
Row 788, it says (as it said on the card) "At head of title: The Sting".  (The Sting is the movie this piece of music was composed for).  I'm not sure what "at head of title" means but for now I've put it in the note field.  Please let me know if this is incorrect.

Finally, the dates for row 822 are strangely noted.  It says on the card "1863 [1865 on back cover]."  I put "[1865 on back cover]" in the note field and put "1863, [1865]" in the publication date and leader date fields.  I'm not sure if this is correct or whether "[1865 on back cover]" should be in a note field so please let me know your thoughts.  Thanks!

Today I cataloged 91 more cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  Everything was routine; the only question I have is with the card with row 701, the 245 field which reads "words by a student of Harvard University" instead of actual names.  I'm not sure what to do with this - for now I've put it in the 245 field.  Jeanette, please let me know if this is okay or needs to be moved or should even be on the spreadsheet because I was under the impression that only specific names would go in this or other statement of responsibility fields.  Thanks for all your help and feedback.

Today I cataloged 80 more cards of the sheet music collection project.  Jeanette, could you please check row 628's publication date: it has "n.d." on the card but also a date in parenthesis so I wasn't sure what to put in the date fields.  I've highlighted it in red.  Could you also please check the card for row 641 - the name on the card is the arranger's, not the composer's, so I put his name in the arranger field; please let me know if this is incorrect and should be moved to the 100 field.  Otherwise, everything was routine.  Thanks!

Shab, sheet music collection project, 3/6/2015

Today I cataloged 90 more cards in the sheet music collection project.  I have a couple of issues which I think I may have brought up before but I can't remember now.  Row 543 has information in the publisher field about the administrator and distributor - I'm not sure if this belongs somewhere on the spreadsheet or if so, then where it does (for now it's in the publisher field highlighted in red - Jeanette, please let me know your thoughts on this or if it should be moved into a statement of responsibility field).

The other new issue I have is that a couple of the cards had the type of music it is in parenthesis next to the title (I think I've asked about this before?)  Rows 537 and 538 had the type of music or dance music it is (polka, march) in parenthesis next to the title.  Jeanette, I vaguely recall asking you about this once before but I can't remember what you said to do with it.  I think we either decided to leave it in the title field or move it to instrumentation or note field.  Could you please let me know what you think.  Could you also please check the instrumentation field in row 531 where I think it involves a similar issue - it had the words "andante elegante" but separated by a period next to the title field - I looked up the words and "andante" is a type of melody.  I've tentatively put that in the instrumentation field; please let me know if that's okay or not.  Thanks!

Today I cataloged 95 more cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  I have several issues.  1) Row 399 - I'm not sure all of that belongs in the title field but upon Googling, all the words about it being a March nationale, etc., appear to be part of the title?  I'm not sure.  I'm also not sure where it would go if not the title field (note field?).  I'm also not sure about the French words I put in the note field.  2) Row 463, there appears to be a date in the title field in parenthesis (not the date of the music, which is vastly different and appears where it usually is) - for now I put the date just as it is in the title field and highlighted in red.  Jeanette, please let me know your thoughts on this because I've never seen a date in this field before.  3) Row 464, please check the title and publisher fields.  It's one of the foreign language cards so the information is all over the place and I'm not sure if it's in the correct places and also if the title in the brackets needs to be included on the spreadsheet.  4) Row 407 is another J.C. Penney bicentennial music card.  I'm starting to wonder if this could possibly be a series and as such needs to be included in the series field?  Jeanette, any thoughts on this?  Please let me know.  Thanks for all your feedback!

Today I cataloged 62 more cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  Row 368's title field - I'm not sure if Independence Day should be capitalized or not (I assumed yes since it's a proper holiday, Jeanette, please let me know if this is incorrect and needs changing).  Row 349 had a note saying "Includes U. S. marine air corps version."  I'm not sure if marine air corps. needs to be capitalized (it was on the card) or if it belongs in a note field as opposed to some other field but to me it looks like it belongs in the note field and wouldn't need capitalization of those words.  Again, Jeanette, please let me know if this is wrong.  Everything else was mostly routine; per my comment last week, I've started to put the "arranged by" information in the arranger column/field instead of the 245 statement of responsibility field.  Also, the title in row 394 includes words describing the type of music it is "lullaby fox trot" - not sure if this should stay in this field or be moved to the instrumentation or note field.  Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this.  Thanks!

Today I cataloged 80 more cards from drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  Here are the questions/issues I have this week: 1) one card (row 330) says "composed by xxxx and arranged for orchestra by xxxx".  I'm uncertain if this information belongs in the 245 field (I suspect not, though that is where I put it for now) or should be put in the co-composer and arranger fields instead.  Please let me know.  Similarly, another card (row 287) had a "translated by xxxx" on it.  Again, I'm not sure if this belongs in the 245 field - is there a field for translators of foreign language music?  2) The J.C. Penney bicentennial music cards are coming up again (row 314) so please let me know what you think about that row.  3) Also in row 287 was a peculiar language note which I've put in the languages (546) field for now.  Could you please review it and let me know what you think and if it's done correctly/belongs in the right place.  Thanks!

Today I cataloged 79 more cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  There are more spelling discrepancies to check against the hard copy music upstairs (highlighted in red and yellow).  Jeanette, could you please also let me know what you think of the title for card/row 230 because it's confusing and I'm not sure if the whole of that info belongs there or also somewhere else.  I've changed the spreadsheet, per your request, to take the brackets and "n.d." out of the date/leader field, but it's still going to be on the previous spreadsheets because I didn't know about the mistake then.  Otherwise, the only question I have is what to do with information on the card that's not really instrumentation info per se, but more like a description of what the music is for, such as "two step" or "hesitation waltz song" (rows 199 and 231).  I don't know if they're supposed to be in the instrumentation field or note field or some other (for now I've put them in the note field; please let me know if this is incorrect and needs to be changed).  Thanks!

Today I cataloged 70 more cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection.  Jeanette, could you please look at the card associated with row 139 (I've highlighted the whole row in red) - the information on this card was very unusual and all over the place.  I did my best but there were several pieces of information which I didn't know where they would go, if they go anywhere at all.  Otherwise, no particularly new questions came up.  I am confused occasionally about where certain pieces of information go if they're not in the field where they normally belong; for example, row 149: the card says it's "transcribed for cello and piano by..." etc.  I'm not sure if all that needs to be in the title field and whether or not it goes there, if that information should be elsewhere too (like the note field?)  It is another statement of responsibility piece of information (I think?) because the transcriber's name is given but there's no field on the spreadsheet for a transcriber.  Jeanette, please let me know your thoughts on this so I can fix it if need be.  Thanks!

Today I managed to catalog 70 cards of drawer 6 of the sheet music collection project.  No real issues were brought up except a few of the cards (highlighted in red and yellow on the spreadsheet) will need to be checked against the hard copy music upstairs since the spelling of the names were contradictory and I couldn't figure out the correct spellings from researching on Google.  This is rows 47 and 48 and 85 and 86.  Everything else was routine.
